The Overlapping Fields of Journalism

The editors of Burn Literary Magazine accepted a state recognition award in May 2014 for superior page designs.

Before coming to Creighton, I knew I wanted to study journalism. I based my college search on my love for a 2-year program at my high school, and I was insistent that I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life.

Two years working for the literary magazine, a year doing our high school weekly video cast and another year spent doing the monthly newspaper set my sights to working in the journalism field forever.

I loved design—it was creative and mind numbing as I attempted to make the magazine spreads look perfect.

I loved videography—it made more sense to me than photography did, and iMovie and I quickly became friends.

I loved writing—telling someone else’s story was thrilling.

I loved working online content—I started the WordPress account for the paper. It wasn’t the greatest site, but it was an important foundation moving forward.

And for some weird reason, I actually liked editing.

In 2013, I attended a National Journalism Convention in Boston where I took a number of classes to further my knowledge and love for Journalism.

But as I was going into college, I felt like I had to pick a specific area of journalism to focus on, so I choose news. Little did I know that our department is not set up to simply pick one area of study.

More than anything, this class has taught me how much they overlap.

News, social media, photographer and videography, advertising and public relations all have fundamental skills that correspond with each other. I particularly enjoyed Jack’s presentation about his internship because it gave a real life insight to the overlap.

That was ultimately the biggest surprise but also the biggest comfort. I don’t have to just pick one area of journalism, but I can choose many. That way I am able to fulfill my love of writing, my love of design, my love of social media, and my love of event planning all in one.
